In a rare and disturbing event, a great white shark was struck by a speedboat off the coast of Southern California. The collision, captured on drone footage, may mark the first time such an incident has been documented at the exact moment of impact. The shark, visible just beneath the water’s surface, was blindsided by the fast-moving vessel and reemerged moments later with a deep, open wound on its tail.
Carlos Gauna, a licensed drone pilot known as The Malibu Artist, was filming marine life near the shoreline when the boat appeared in frame. As the vessel passed over the shark’s location, the animal surfaced with a large gash across its caudal peduncle—a telltale sign of a propeller strike.
A thin line of blood trailed behind it as it slowly swam away, footage shows, captured by Gauna’s drone at close range and later shared on his YouTube channel and social platforms, BeachGrit reports.
