Birds in Florida and the Southeast are injured, hungry, and dying after Hurricanes Helene and Milton wreaked havoc on their sanctuaries. They need your help NOW.
Helene has caused an ecological disaster across the southeastern U.S. which could affect wildlife for years to come. Milton, inflicting back-to-back damage only made matters worse. Bird sanctuaries were among those hit hard by the storms. Many birds became injured due to strong winds, which peaked at 140 miles per hour under Helene. The sanctuaries themselves were also severely damaged, including the loss of food, power, and water.
Sanctuaries in Florida have been inundated by an influx of birds affected by red tide. Red tides are harmful algal blooms that produce toxins which can kill fish, make shellfish dangerous to eat, and make air difficult to breathe. They can kill non-aquatic life, too, including birds. The hurricanes' intensity churned up water, accelerating the growth of red tides and bringing them closer to shore. This has left many birds seriously ill and in need of urgent care.
Greater Good Charities has teams on the ground providing urgent support and supplies to bird sanctuaries in Florida and North Carolina. But we can't provide this aid without your support. We must act now to save the birds.
